Sweetgum
NativeLiquidambar styraciflua
Sweetgum (Altingiaceae) · Other broadleaf · 60–90 ft
Knowing it
Star-shaped leaves, corky twigs and the spiky gum balls that litter yards. Native to the Bootheel and southeastern bottoms, planted statewide.
What a tree company sees
Moderately strong but surface roots heave sidewalks and the balls are a constant complaint; removal requests are common.
